Add a photo
Taking a photo of a print so it joins the archive. About ten seconds each once you have a rhythm.
- Tap Add a photo at the top of the main screen.
- Lay the print down flat and hold the tablet over it. Daylight from a window beats a ceiling light, which throws a reflection off glossy prints.
- Tap to take it. You get a look at what you took before anything is kept.
- Answer the question about the back. It asks, in words, whether there is anything written on the back. If there is, take a photo of that too — see the back of a photo. If not, say so and it goes straight in.
Doing a stack of them
Two people is much faster than one. One holds and turns the prints, the other works the tablet. She does not have to be the one taking the photos — plenty of families take the photos on a wet afternoon and leave the talking for later, which is the better order anyway.
If the tablet cannot reach the archive
It will say so, in one line, and it will say the photo is safe on the tablet. It is.
- The photo is kept on the tablet and sent as soon as the archive answers again.
- It tries by itself — when the app is opened, when it comes back to the front, and every couple of minutes.
- There is a Try now button for when you can see the wifi is back and do not want to wait.
- Fronts are sent before backs, so a back is never left attached to nothing.
Nothing leaves the queue except a photo that has actually arrived. You can close the app, or turn the tablet off, without losing anything waiting to be sent.
Anything still waiting to be sent is kept in the app's own storage, not the camera roll, so tidying the gallery is safe. But if you are in any doubt, open the app and let it finish sending first.
Photos that are already on a computer
Scans and digital photos do not need a new photo taking. Whoever looks after the archive can bring a folder in directly, which keeps the original file exactly as it is. Ask them rather than taking a photo of a screen.
If she takes one by accident
Backing out of the camera asks Keep this photo? before anything is thrown away. If one does get in that should not have, whoever looks after the archive can hide it — it is not deleted, because in this archive nothing is.
