Stories are shared with the family by themselves. Only sending one outside the family is a decision somebody makes.
Inside the family
An hour after a story is recorded it is shared with the family. She does not press anything, and there is no publish button to find.
The hour exists so that "keep that one just for me" is possible without her having to decide in the moment she finishes talking.
Whoever looks after the archive can see that she recorded four stories yesterday. They cannot listen to one until it has been shared. That is enforced by the archive, not by manners.
Outside the family
A single story can be sent to someone with no account and no app — a cousin, a neighbour, a grandchild. They get a link and open it in whatever browser they have.
This is done from the admin console by whoever looks after the archive, not from the tablet. Sending something to a particular person is an errand, and errands do not belong on her screen.
- The link plays one story — the photo, the voice, the drawings, and the back of the print.
- It can have a PIN on it.
- It can be set to stop working on a date.
- You can see how many times it has been opened.
Turning a link off
Revoke it in the console. It stops working on the very next request — for everybody who has it, including anyone with the page already open, the moment they touch anything.
Revoking stops the archive serving it. It cannot reach into somebody's email, and it cannot take back a file they already saved. Treat sending a link as permanent, and revoke as a way to stop it spreading further.
If she changes her mind
Deleting a story stops it being served everywhere at once, including through any link already sent. Nothing carries on playing because it was cached. See deleting a story.
Saving a copy
Under the player there are buttons to save the story as an ordinary video file — a full-size one, and a smaller one for emailing. The photo on its own can be saved too.
That file has everything baked in and needs none of our software to open, which is the point: it will still play when this archive is somebody's grandchildren's problem.
